A digital scanning bed was used to produce this new series of metallic prints. The images are achieved through an eclectic range of natural and found light conditions during an intricate scanning process while suspending actual flowers in dark space. These photographs manage to capture the internal magic of flowers as characters with a broad range of mood and presence. Whether stark, painterly, sensual or even humorous, these pictures visualize an imaginative world.With a fascination for found materials and mixed media, Geoffrey Leven describes his growing focus on floral images, “As a perennial gardener, I became aware of how the light caused flowers to change through the day. I began to photograph Day Lilies as morning light moved onto them and then witnessed how the ‘magic hour’ of late afternoon moved through them, causing a dramatic transparent finish. Every day the light is different. Often there is barely a minute left of daylight to capture that special moment. With the ever changing light and the subject on the verge of folding up, it is not unlike shooting a moving target as day fades to dust.”Geoffrey Leven graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in fine art, photography and graphic design and then studied printmaking at the Pratt Graphics Center and went on to create an extensive body of work at the Dieu Donne Artist’s Papermill in downtown Manhattan. His current work is clearly informed from his years as an award-winning multiscreeen projection show designer for projects sponsored by IBM, Philip Morris, Japan Airlines, and the Whitney Museum to name a few. Geoffrey Leven also curated many shows at his art gallery, The Yellow House. Born in Baltimore, Geoffrey resides in New York City, where he pursues his visual art and writing full-time.
